Global recording artist, actor, and community organizer Vic Mensa’s 93 Boyz and the cast of Showtime TV series, The Chi, all gathered for the Feed The Block initiative yesterday afternoon to distribute warm meals to the migrants and unhoused population in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.
Joined by fellow cast members, Jason Weaver, Luke James, Hannaha Hall, Jacob Latimore and Cortez Smith and Vic Mensa partnered with local Chicago southern-style restaurant, The Delta, to bring warm meals and cold weather items to Pilsen’s unhoused community as they weather Chicago’s brutal winter.
“Feed The Block is an initiative we've been doing through 93Boyz, my cannabis company, since the onset of winter in Chicago," said Vic Mensa. "The cold months in this city can be brutal, exacerbating the already dire circumstances that thousands of unhoused people face in Chicago every year. By partnering with a local Black owned restaurant called The Delta, we've been able to serve countless meals to those in need as well as provide warm clothing and supplies such as sanitary products, toiletries etc. A primary pillar of 93Boyz ethos has always been reinvestment into community; Feed The Block is one of our many ways of giving back. “
Since August 2022, Chicago has welcomed over 34,000 migrants from southern border countries, leaving a large population of people and families displaced and with limited means. Indeed, conditions became worse during Chicago’s peak winter season where temperatures reached the negatives for almost a week straight.
"Often times we take for granted the necessities that some may view as a luxury. A balanced meal and warm clothes should not be a luxury," said Eldridge Williams, owner of The Delta. "That’s why this initiative is necessary and important."
